Adam Brouillette Born in: Munster, IN Birthdate: June 4th Last Updated: Tue, Dec 4, 2007 Personal Contact: adam@littleredmen.com Website: http://www.littleredmen.com
Working to establish myself as a strong member of the Columbus, Ohio arts community, I have promoted myself as both an artist and an arts advocate. My personal artwork along with my involvement in several arts organizations has led me to notoriety in the community. My artwork has become distinct in its style and has developed greatly over the years. I have won several awards, am part of an abundance of private collections, and am displayed publicly in many locations. A 2002 graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design, I started creating my current body of work a few years before graduating and have continued since.
Throughout college, I spent time as a printmaker, learning the technical aspects of classical printmaking and eventually rejecting its stylistic features for the bright graphic colors of more modern processes related to screen printing and graphic design. My current work utilizes these elements to communicate to an audience, though a majority of my works are now produced as paintings.
I am involved in several organizations related to promoting the arts. I have been a member of the Ohio Art League since 1999, working as a volunteer, an intern, and eventually being asked to the Board of Trustees where I currently serve as Chair of the Exhibitions Committee. I am also involved in the Couchfire Collective, a group of like-minded artists who work together to create events that promote local arts. I have also helped other local arts organizations, such as the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Grandview Arts Council, by participating in discussions on how to best serve artists in the community. Always a lover of design and comic aesthetics, I spent most of my years before art school building with Legos, reading comic books, skateboarding, and playing in bands. My interests in drawing and creating have always stayed with me. These interests have lead me through several related occupations, eventually leading me to gather with close friends and start a creative design studio called I LOVE TREEFORT. Being born in Indiana, moving to Ohio, and spending many of my summers in northern Wisconsin, I consider myself a Midwestern kid. On trips around the country with my band, I have witnessed several other wonderful places only to find that I love the Midwest.
Social observation, interpersonal connections, always being busy, building, drawing, arranging, philosophy and introspective thought, video games (mostly Nintendo), college football, designing, moveable furniture, Ikea, Columbus, friends, family, Legos, my car (a Scion Xb), several different forms of music, my band, playing guitar, playing drums, how things work, flags, science, planets, astronauts, movies, Star Wars anything, Willy Wonka, The Price is Right, Jeopardy, Monopoly, Scrabble, penguins, giraffes, and traveling.
Bob Barker, Willy Wonka, David Attenbourough, David Sadaris, Rick Pringle (the best friend anyone could ever have), Yoshitomo Nara, Hayo Miyazaki, Marcel Duchamp, Hello Kitty, most of the Cartoon Network, Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, the Force, the Secret, packaging, design, my family, various teachers (for better or worse), reaction to current events and social interaction, Shell Silverstien, Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, Charles Shultz, Antoine De Saint-Expurey, Nintendo, my mom, stepdad, sister, and anyone who works hard and doesn't stop
I believe in the ability of simple imagery. Simple images can convey a basic understanding of even the most complex ideas. I like to use the explosion of color and design that is inherent in advertising and cartoons, to convey, in a simple fashion, the broader ideas of social and personal philosophy, ideas of scientific theory and discovery, and commentary on life as I see it. I utilize bright colors and bubbly characters to attract a viewer, and am most satisfied when someone connects to the work in that way, only to discover content subverted by the design. I see this as how advertising and cartoons work and I strive for it. I utilize familiar information to provide the viewer with a basic construct for understanding the ideas I am trying to convey. To me, art has three parts: the idea, the carrying out of that idea, and the reaction to the creation. It is the responsibility of the artist, not to make the viewer understand directly what they are thinking, but to guide them through a funnel-like construct to the possibilities that the artwork can hold.
