Tom graduated from Ohio State University in 2008 with a degree in Japanese language. As a student, he lived and traveled in Japan and China, during which time he became interested in the visual nature of written language and how the visual characteristics of a written passage or illustrated narrative could communicate ideas that cross linguistic boundaries. In particular, he is interested in universal forms of communication, such as art, design, music, and the places where these fields intermingle to create a universally communicable visual culture.

Tom currently works as a graphic designer and illustrator, running the design group Option D Design out of Junctionview with his partners Lisa Steward and Charles Goren. He spends most days working in the studio.
