Proposal Title
Change for Change
Please describe your proposal?
If one spends any extended period of time around Ohio State, they will notice that the homeless around here are no joke. Referred to by the student population as the "High Street Bums," the homeless people here rap, backflip, and peddle for change. Most students' view of them is a poor one - they see them as low class individuals not worthy of the time of day. I do not see them like that - I see them as people who, for one reason or another, got down on their luck and are struggling to change, and get their lives back on track. For my senior year at The Ohio State University, I wish to pursue a social documentary on the homeless population of Columbus. For one year, I will get to know these people by spending as much time with them as possible. I will attempt to understand their lifestyles and how they came to be as they are. This year-long social documentary will include photographs (of many formats), video, and written excerpts all done by me, and will culminate at the end of the year in my senior exhibition.
What is the timeframe for the proposal and its completion?
I will begin to work on this project in June, 2010, and continue until my senior exhibition in June, 2011.
How will you use the award money to complete the proposal?
I will spend the money mostly buying film, paper for making prints, and other supplies. If the money exists, I may rent and/or purchase a video camera, as I currently do not own one.
What makes this the proposal to vote for?
I came up with this idea my freshman year of college, and have been thinking and rethinking my options for it. I feel that I have a very unique idea and will deliver a multimedia project that will be clear, professional, and hopefully moving. I really want people to understand what it means to be homeless, in Columbus especially, the hardships of it and understand that being homeless does not make one a worthless person.
