Proposal Title
BUS Project

Please describe your proposal?
I attended the first meeting at Junctionview Studios proposing that Columbus would be the "Independent Art Capital of the World" a few years ago. While I was curious how the idea would be received by the city I was inspired to contribute to the idea as an independent artist. The project I conceived involved creating thousands of small, numbered, wooden blocks with a school bus printed on one side and a shoe sole print or design on the other. Buses are periodically distributed throughout the city while recording their number and placement location. After distributing a large enough number of buses to achieve an awareness of the project an attempt would be made to retrieve the buses kept by citizens. Citizens returning buses would be asked to contribute art or writing about what living in Columbus means to them and possibly the circumstances of finding the bus.

While this project contains many different themes within an artistic context it's primary goals are first, to increase public awareness of art in Columbus by making art accessible to all pedestrians. Second, to promote the benefits of a pedestrian lifestyle and that Columbus needs to become a more pedestrian friendly city. Finally, to present a community centered project building the ties between citizens with similar interests.

What is the timeframe for the proposal and its completion?
Thus far 311 buses have been distributed throughout the city. I plan to have at least 2000 distributed and would exhibit the buses and community contributions before 2011.

How will you use the award money to complete the proposal?
Because this project is pedestrian oriented I do not want to use the internet to retrieve the buses. Ideally I would like to work through the pedestrian. Money would be used to fund billboard(s) and fliers to advertise participation in the project. Money could also be used for a venue to show the project if no space presented itself.

What makes this the proposal to vote for?
This project was designed to expand the Columbus art scene literally onto the street with the potential to reach entire communities. It fosters community bonds of living in "The Bus" and encourages citizens to contribute through artistic expression while advocating changes for a better Columbus.
